A slice of sweetness shared with those you love.
Ingredients
Dry ingredients:
2 cups (250 g) all-purpose flour
2 cups (400 g) granulated sugar
¾ cup (75 g) unsweetened cocoa powder (use Dutch-process for deeper flavor)
2 tsp baking powder
1½ tsp baking soda
1 tsp salt
Wet ingredients:
2 large eggs
1 cup (240 ml) whole milk (or buttermilk for extra richness)
½ cup (120 ml) vegetable oil (or melted butter for extra flavor)
2 tsp pure vanilla extract
Add last:
1 cup (240 ml) boiling water or hot coffee (coffee intensifies the chocolate flavor)
Instructions
Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans (or one 9×13-inch pan).
In a large bowl, whisk together dry ingredients — flour, sugar, cocoa, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
Add the wet ingredients (eggs, milk, oil, vanilla). Beat with a mixer on medium speed for 2 minutes.
Stir in the boiling water or hot coffee. Batter will be thin — that’s what makes it moist!
Pour into prepared pans.
Bake for 30–35 minutes (round pans) or 40–45 minutes (9×13 pan), until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
Cool for 10 minutes in the pan, then remove and cool completely on a wire rack.
Optional: Chocolate Frosting
Ingredients:
1 cup (230 g) unsalted butter, softened
3½ cups (440 g) powdered sugar
½ cup (45 g) cocoa powder
½ tsp salt
2 tsp vanilla extract
4 tbsp heavy cream or milk (add more for desired consistency)
Instructions:
Beat butter until creamy.
Add powdered sugar, cocoa, and salt. Mix on low speed until combined.
Add vanilla and cream; beat on high speed until fluffy (2–3 minutes).
Tips for Extra Moisture
Use buttermilk instead of milk if you want a slightly tangier, richer flavor.
Wrap layers in plastic wrap while still slightly warm and chill overnight before frosting — it locks in moisture.
If using coffee, make it strong and hot to deepen the chocolate taste without adding bitterness.
If your kitchen smells amazing right now, that’s a very good sign — this recipe fills the house with that rich, bakery-style chocolate aroma.
A couple of quick tips while it’s baking:
- Don’t worry if the batter looked thin — that’s what makes it extra moist.
- When you test it, the toothpick should come out with just a few moist crumbs, not completely dry.
- Let it cool at least 10–15 minutes before moving it — it’s delicate when warm.
A few quick pro tips to make canned frosting taste (and spread) even better:
- Whip it – Scoop it into a bowl and beat it with a hand mixer for a minute or two. It’ll double in volume and get that homemade fluffy texture.
- Soften it slightly – If it’s too firm, microwave it (uncovered) for 5–10 seconds — just until it stirs smoothly.
- Enhance the flavor – Stir in a teaspoon of vanilla, espresso powder, or a pinch of salt to deepen the chocolate flavor.
- Apply to a cool cake – If the cake’s still warm, the frosting will melt and slide off (tempting as it is to dive right in).
Once it’s cooled and frosted, I bet it’s going to be fantastic. Enjoy that first slice — warm, fudgy chocolate cake fresh from the oven is tough to beat.
